St Martha's was originally built as a daughter church (known as a "Chapel of Ease") to St. Peter & St. Paul, the Parish Church in the centre of Tring. The Vestry and Chancel were built in the 1880s but the building was never completed as originally intended, and it was never consecrated. The wooden structure - the Nave - was added around the 1920s and a porch added in the early 1960s.
In the early 1970s it seemed that Anglian/Methodist unity was imminent. The original Methodist chapel in Langdon Street was suffering from dry rot and the Parish Church needed a modern Church Hall. The Anglicans and Methodists therefore agreed to build the new hall as a joint venture. The Methodists sold their chapel and the Anglicans sold their Victorian Church Hall at the top of Christchurch Road (known today as 'The Old Church House') and the money was put towards the cost of building the new Anglican/Methodist Church Hall. The Methodist congregation was offered the use of St Martha's.
Eventually, the Methodists decided they wanted to improve their facilities but this would only be possible if the Methodists owned the building, so, in 2002, the Methodists gave up their share of the Anglican/Methodist Church Hall in exchange for ownership of St Martha's.
In 2018 an extension was added to the rear of the building to include a modern kitchen and all-access toilet.
